When performing a lot of demos and speaking engagements, I feel it is necessary to engage the audience. We learn by all senses. The audience is full of different type of receivers: visual, active, audible and so forth. If we engage with only one type, attention of the audience will be lost and so is the information. This is just like fitting a client with a coach. A coach like a speaker needs to know their audience and be versatile.
I give the advice, of go with someone to receive guidance that matches your personality. Are you blunt? Like to talk? Personable or just want someone to tell you what to do and care less about the why? These are the things you need to put in place when choosing a person of guidance in nutrition and fitness. Not everyone needs Jillian Michaels to yell at them to get the job done- I don't but some of my friends insist on it. Know yourself before you begin, allow for 6 months to 1 year of fitness guidance if you are just starting out. Do they come to you or do you go to them? do they offer nutrition service or do they work with a nutritionist/ recommend one? Does your insurance offer services? Your checklist (you can add / take away but this is just a guide). 1. Facebook is a great place to ask about nutrition / fitness services in your area 2. How the sessions are conducted: Virtual or in-person; equipment/ no equipment; homework/ no homework... 3. Complimentary session 30 minutes at least 4. Offer nutrition services or can recommend one 5. (this should be first if you have insurance or wellness insurance) Ask your insurance company the options 6. Interview at least 5 trainers, all have different styles and different ways of communication/ prices 7. Costs. You pay for what you get, most of the time. My fitness company, Core Door Fitness, was pay what you can - I had clients who made 8 figures but my training style was well received by thousands so even they paid less than $300 an hour. Typically budget for the first 3 months: ($30 per session x 2 sessions per week) $300 for the month in fitness, ($60 per week) $300 in food and $200 for nutrition). About $1000 sounds crazy, I know but I am being honest... You cannot purchase a bike without wheels. My recommendation is that some trainers can guide you with basic nutrition ( I would go to a specialist for special cases such as pace maker, heart issues, or post-cancer, diabetes....) Sometimes your insurance will help out or the government. Whereas special cases are $300 for the first 3 months but on a payment plan. Bottom-line: Ask around and find out who does what. People's reputation in fitness and nutrition does not stay a secret; good or bad you will know about it and most trainers will work with your budget. 8. What is their background? Do they hold a certification and knowledge? You can have a paper but cannot coach or do not extend yourself beyond the scope of the classroom. It is important a trainer can adjust your workout to fit you. You are not a carbon copy, neither should your workout be. 9. Know yourself, are you a morning person - can you make and be consistent with your workouts. The goal is to do this on your own. So, don't expect your trainer to do everything. If you have 2 sessions a week, which I recommend for the first 3 months - you need to incorporate more workouts on your own. Your trainer should be willing to give you tips. If they don't, may just want your money. A great trainer gives you homework; simplified so you don't get injured but good enough where you have a great success with your goals. 10. Goals: make sure you have them. Long term, and then short term; should look like this: 12 month: goal then month 1 goal, written under that: 4 weekly goals for the month. Write month 2 and the 4 weekly goals. By month 5 you should have monthly goals. If not, something is amiss, either you, the trainer or the workout. Fix it quick. Lastly, nutrition goals. The percentage is this: 80/10/10 meaning 80% nutrition, 10% lifestyle, 10% fitness. Because you cannot have success by putting same old funky food in your body and expect results. You can still yield underlying ghosts such as diabetes, heart disease, clogged arteries, broken bones due to lack of vitamin D, etc. Deal is you have to have a solid nutritional plan to lead your fitness. The competition is held after the students conduct 5 workshops that dive deep into the science behind why eating healthy is important with plant-based being the theme. The workshop contains a workbook that has been contributed by series of certified wellness authors, who's work has been researched before being placed into the workbook. The 5 workshops are Introduction to Healthy Cooking, Fats and Cholesterol, Sodium, Sugar and Diabetes, Portion Control and how to prepare for the competition. Super excited to be on the Board of Flavor For Life, plant-based culinary movement. What will be taught in the program I was the writer as well a the editor for it. This for me is a huge accomplishment in this field. Rarely does one get to do what they love and spread the knowledge to others. The program is science-based as well teaching what I founded and based Skinny South Incredible Treats, food pairing. It is important to see the basis of health is in food.
